Chapter 1: Basic Scams
1. SMS Scams
Scammers may discover your phone number (such as your Alipay or WeChat account) after placing an order. They might chat with you to delay time and then send you a fake payment confirmation SMS. If you fail to verify the balance before releasing the funds, you may fall victim to the scam.
Tip: The safest method to confirm receipt is to log into online banking or use a mobile app to check the balance. Only release the funds after confirming receipt.
2. Payment on Behalf
Scammers may use Alipay and select the option to “Please pay XXX amount on my behalf,” using a picture that looks similar to a transfer screenshot. If you do not verify the balance received, you might release the funds without receiving the payment.
Additionally, be cautious if the scammer uses a QR code with a specified amount, which may differ from the actual payment amount. For example, if you are purchasing a 500 yuan order, but the QR code is set for 5000 yuan, you might accidentally transfer more than intended.
Tip: When using WeChat or Alipay for payments, be wary of “payment on behalf” orders. Carefully check the order details and ensure the payment amount is correct before releasing the funds.
3. Fake Receipt Scams
Scammers may send a fake receipt after clicking “Confirm Payment.” If you release the funds without verifying receipt, you may be deceived.
Tip: Always log into your bank account to check if the balance has increased. Review Alipay and WeChat statements to confirm receipt.
4. Incorrect Transfers
The scammer might intentionally transfer to the wrong account (e.g., to an accomplice) and provide a payment screenshot to the merchant or customer service, requesting the release of funds.
Tip: Rely on the transaction records of your own receiving account. Never release funds if the money has not been received.
5. Repeated Orders with the Same Amount
Scammers may place multiple orders with the same amount in a short period using different accounts or the same account. If you do not carefully verify the transactions and orders, you may be tricked into releasing the funds.
Example: A user places four orders of 1000 USDT each. After the fifth order, the user does not make a payment but clicks “Paid.” If the time between the last two orders is very short, you may mistakenly release the funds for the fifth order without verifying.
Tip: In such cases, regardless of the urgency from the other party, verify order details and transaction records carefully. Check that the payment account name matches the platform’s real-name verification. Do not release the funds if there are any discrepancies.
6. Exploiting Alipay Functions
Example 1: User A buys crypto from Merchant B. After placing the order, User A clicks “Paid” (without actually paying) and constantly urges Merchant B to release the crypto. User A may also send a fake Alipay payment screenshot through the order chat window.
Example 2: User A buys crypto from Merchant B. After placing the order, User A clicks “Paid” (without actually paying) and uses the “Request Payment” function to send a fake payment request to Merchant B, creating confusion. If Merchant B mistakenly clicks “Pay Now,” they may fall victim.
Chapter 2: Intermediate Scams
1. Same Amount Orders
Two users may place orders with identical amounts. If User A makes the payment but does not mark it as paid, and User B, who has not paid, clicks “Confirm Payment” and provides a screenshot of User A’s transfer, urging release, the seller might release the funds prematurely if they do not verify the payer.
Tip: Do not rush the transaction. Be cautious of orders with the same amount. Verify transfer information carefully and do not release the funds hastily.
2. Partial Payments
A user might place an order for 10,000 yuan but only pay 1,000 yuan, or place an order for 1,000 USDT and pay 1,000 yuan, among similar actions.
Tip: Report such actions to customer service. Customer service will investigate the reason behind such transactions. (This may not always be a scam; it could be a new user’s mistake.)
Chapter 3: Advanced Scams
1. Simultaneous Identical Orders
Two users place orders with identical amounts. User A pays but does not mark it as paid, while User B, who has not paid, clicks “Confirm Payment” and provides a screenshot of User A’s transfer, repeatedly urging release. If you release the funds without verifying the payer, User A might later provide a payment receipt and request the release.
2. Partial Payment for Large Orders
A user might place an order for 10,000 yuan but only pay 1,000 yuan, or place an order for 1,000 USDT but only pay 1,000 yuan, etc. Report such cases to customer service for verification.
3. Impersonation and Fake Guarantees
Scammers A and B may place orders and use WeChat to add you as a friend, pretending to be interested in long-term cooperation. After some time, Scammer A changes their WeChat information to someone else’s and contacts you for an offline transaction, asking for a guarantee from someone who appears to be a customer service representative, official, or a well-known figure in the crypto community. Scammer B then impersonates the supposed guarantor and creates a group chat for the transaction. If you release the crypto without receiving payment, you will be scammed.
Tip: Scammer B might also impersonate other team members or platform customer service, providing fake screenshots. Megabit staff will not act as transaction guarantors.
4. Offline Scam Setup
Scammer A collaborates with Scammer C to set up a scam. Scammer A finds C and says: “I am selling crypto at a price of 10,000 each (slightly above market price). I will post an ad and you place the order.” Scammer A then contacts Scammer B, offering to sell the crypto at a lower price and asking B to post the ad. C then provides a screenshot of the order to A, who then instructs B to say A’s name in the order chat or remain silent. B is told to send the payment to another account of A, while A will provide their name in the chat to prove the ad. Scammer C transfers money to A, but B cannot release the funds as no payment was received.
Tip: Do not mention any individual’s name in the order chat. Ensure payments are made to the recipient’s registered payment method and match the platform’s real-name information.
